An International Driving License (IDL) (or International Driver's License) is implemented to show that you hold a valid driver's license in your own country of origin. It provides a translation into eight languages, designed so that police and other authorities in other countries can read your license in their own language. Traveling with an international drivers license translation therefore has many advantages. The IDL is purposed to overcome the difficulties drivers might encounter while traveling in other countries that have different requirements. The IDL is a special license for tourists authorized by United Nations conventions on road safety in 1923, 1943, 1949, and 1968. Nearly 180 countries are members of this agreement. The IDL is printed in several languages - five official UN languages: English, French, Spanish, Russian, and Chinese, and also German, Arabic and Korean. It is valid in all the countries that signed the agreement. Many other countries that did not sign the treaty also recognize the international drivers license and accept it on their territory. An IDL is an official translation of your domestic driver's license and is easy to obtain because it does not require an written or driving tests, and is available for a small fee.
How to properly use the document.- Driving as a tourist in any place of the world, you can present your current valid driver license, plus the International Drivers License translation (IDL Booklet plus the card) to facilitate the understanding of your permit to any local authority in the world
- This translation is valid for up to three years, but it can’t be used for more than a year in the same country, or once the driver establishes a residence there. If the driver lives or stays in this country, the motorist must apply for a local driving permit
- Remember, the international drivers license ( or international driving licence) is only a translation of a driver's license and not a regular driver's license. The international driver licence, without a currently valid driving permit is not a useful or valid document to present to any authority
